Education: A Year In Review

The Highlights and major developments of the year 2021

2021 was a long year in education. From Class 12 Board Exams being cancelled to the emergence of a unicorn in edtech, the education ecosystem has transformed in the post-pandemic world. One of the most significant moments was the appointment of our new Minister of Education and Minister of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, Dharmendra Pradhan. New leadership came in time to take forward the changes in educational trends and policies, most notably the implementation of the new National Education Policy 2020, which has caused much discussion and debate.

While 2020 saw the rise of Edtech, the year 2021 solidified its position in the ecosystem. Unacademy became a unicorn, while many edtechs were acquired by other companies, most notably, Byju’s.

Higher education institutes had a big year investing in research, collaborating with industry tycoons and edtechs to create a more seamless online education and training system. The efforts to recognise and bridge the skills gap took centre stage, an ongoing effort from all stakeholders. 2021 closes with the rising threat of the new omicron variant, however, unlike the previous year education institutes are more prepared, with both online and offline programmes ready to go.
