LPU Students Invent New Machine For Cotton Picking
Winner of the ‘Technical Innovation Award’ in the ‘Texas Instruments Innovation Challenge’ (TI IICDC) for their invention, this machine is set to revolutionize the industry in India

Students from the School of Electronics and Electrical Engineering at Lovely Professional University have developed a revolutionary new machine for Cotton Picking that will offer farmers respite from ‘handpicking cotton’. The machine, that automatically picks cotton balls from the plant not only takes away the amount of labour involved but also expedites the process. It was recently showcased by the students at the prestigious ‘Texas Instruments Innovation Challenge’ (TI IICDC-19) where they won the ‘Second Technical Innovation Award’ for their innovation.
Manual cotton picking is extremely tiresome, monotonous and back-breaking work. With the average cotton plant less than three feet high, workers have to continuously stoop down to pick cotton. Manual picking of cotton is still prevalent in the countries like China, India, Turkey and Brazil and amounts to almost 70 per cent of the cotton produced world over. The machine developed by LPU students uses an object detection system to detect cotton with the help of a robotic arm and vacuum pump to pick the cotton ball from the plant and can be a worthy replacement for this age-old process. The students are now trying to apply this technology for other vegetables as well in hydroponics agriculture.
‘The Texas Instruments Innovation Challenge’, whereLPU’s team “Let’s go Farmers” won the award for the machine involved the who’s who from the Indian education, industry and entrepreneurship ecosystem. Conducted by Texas Instruments in collaboration with the Department of Science and Technology (DST), the event was powered by the AICTE and supported by MyGov. It was anchored by NSRCEL (Centre for Entrepreneurial Learning) along with the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore (IIMB).
