Why Cost Effective EdTech Platforms Are Important In The Current Situation?
We must consider the role of affordability of the technology in making Edtech platform so desirable.
Recent times have seen a much-needed change in the B2C segment with respect to Edtech platforms. The decision makers in the Edtech space have always been the students, schools, and parents. In the current situation, Edtech platform has become more of a necessity rather than an option. It’s now necessary for schools and students to keep abreast with the changing times and adapt. Online classes have evidently been more fruitful for the students. It has opened up a lot of opportunities for students to attend classes by teachers coming from far and wide.
We must consider the role of affordability of the technology in making Edtech platform so desirable. The Edtech platforms would have been widely accepted, and across sections of society, if it wasn’t cost effective. The race to become the most used Edtech platform can be won only if its quality content is able to reach the masses while being light on the pocket.
NEP (National Education Policy) has recently added coding as one of the courses to promote skill-based learning. This sounds easier said than done, especially in the current situation. Adding a new course to the existing curriculum is expensive and time consuming. This may result in making quality content inaccessible to the masses. Platform that will devise the most cost-effective delivery of such courses will surely win the game.
The schools are not the only one trying to find a pocket-friendly solution for online classes. Students from the lower income families faced many issues in attending online classes this year starting from having a spared smart phone, data cost and the platform fee. The government has tried its best to provide free content to the students through various sources. Many Edtech platforms have also provided free services during the pandemic. However, they fail to address the issue of connectivity after the current situation gets better. The students are now accustomed to being connected to the best resources and we need to ensure that they continue to do so even after the situation gets better.
Cost effectiveness is not only about designing a platform but also about the teachers who would teach that content. The platform can be made cost effective for teachers by connecting them with maximum number of students at a minimum cost. The effectiveness of this will result in adoption of the platform by teachers as well as the students.
Every Edtech company wants to be cost-effective. This spirit is good for the market and the stakeholders. There are so many Edtech players in the market that it creates a competitive environment. Each Edtech platform will strive to be as cost effective as possible to cater to as many students as they can.
What a parent should consider before selecting an Edtech platform for their kid
Parent should be very clear what exactly he is looking forward. Many times student just need little support for clearing doubts during his/her self-study. Those students don’t need load of digital content on platform but platform where they can ask their queries and some mentor can answer them in time is good enough. Mentor can be online or offline depending on age group of students. For lower grade students its always suggested that mentor be online as lower grade students are not very clear about their doubts also many times. For higher grade students most of the time they are looking for explanation of some topic or solution to a particular problem which can be offline as well.
Some students not having access to good schools need full content as most of the topic they are primarily going to study first time. These are students who are primarily looking forward for tuition support outside school. These students should select platform with good reference material and live mentor. Live mentors also come with 2 options now a days. One setup where one teacher teaches many students in one class and in another setup where one teacher teaches one student. Obviously one to one teaching becomes very expensive and not effective also for many students as for many students’ peer to peer learning found to be better performing. Parents can select batch size of 7-12 students as that’s ideal size for peer to peer learning and pocket friendly also.
For most economical option one to many is always better but then make sure that platform has some feature where student can ask his query after class hours and are getting immediately answered. As in one to many setup clearing doubt is most important thing.
In coming years Rural India will be a major driving force for online education due to scarcity of good education infrastructure available locally. Leading platforms have to adapt rural economy and pricing model.
Education is a fundamental right of children. In today's era, digital education is de facto delivery mechanism. It has to be affordable and accessible to every student.
