JNUSU Requests UGC Extension of Research Submission Deadlines

The Jawaharlal Nehru University Student Union (JNUSU) has asked the University Grants Commission (UGC) to extend the deadline for MPhil and PhD submissions for research scholars, as well as to award non-NET fellowships.

The Jawaharlal Nehru University Student Union (JNUSU) has requested the University Grants Commission (UGC) to extend the MPhil, PhD submission timeline for research scholars as well as to disburse non-NET fellowship. The student union said in a statement its representatives visited the UGC on October 27 and met additional secretary Satendra Singh and also its undersecretary.

The JNUSU said fieldwork of scholars was affected due to the closing down of institutions and libraries owing to Covid. “In this light, the JNUSU as demanded earlier, requested upon UGC to extend timeline for submission. We received a positive response, that the UGC has not been hesitant towards giving extension, and as earlier months, will deliberate and soon come out with a notification regarding the same," it said.

In its list of demands, the student body highlighted the “issue of research scholars who have not been receiving their non-NET Fellowship”. “There are cases where students have not received fellowship from past 8-9 months and some cases even over a year.

There are several times JNUSU has approached both the JNU Administration and the UGC regarding the same. The JNU Administration has time and again cited lack of funds, and no disbursal of funds from UGC as the reason," the JNUSU said.

It added that the UGC officials responded that "they have been regularly sending funds to JNU, and any issue happening regarding funds need to be dealt at the level of JNU Administration".

"The UGC even cited that a fund of 120 crore rupees has been disbursed on 26/10/21, which will reach the JNU Administration," it said. The JNUSU also demanded to resolve the pending issues of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and non-Net fellowship recovery, to reject the proposal of non-NET II, and increase the amount for non-NET, and for the students to have the option to change the NET exam centres.

"The JNUSU placed a demand for the option of change of centres to be provided to students owing to the delay in the conduct of NET examination. “The UGC has assured the JNUSU that students requiring a centre change should approach the NTA and that the UGC shall also convey the necessity of the demand to the NTA. The JNUSU shall also approach the NTA regarding the same," it said.
