The MBA: MDI: A Glimpse

With years down the lane, I am set in my career and have developed vocations apart from my regular job of writing, reading in academics and fiction

'After Graduation, I will do MBA’– It is the common verse that all the graduating folks of various disciplines have in their mind, especially in a developing country called India, especially in the context that most of the MBAs especially from the IIM’s are almost in the top brass executives and with their quality work has made marks on World mind-set.

The next question in line, after an earlier one, that comes is, ‘From where I should pursue my MBA?’ An Indian nerd who is obsessed with the IIT and IIM will reply in an affirmative way for these institutions.

Now the question comes, 'Why and what makes you go for MBA?’ Sadly, most of the students and even most of the industry practitioners are not clear with the idea, “Why do we need an MBA?” Almost all of the recruiters are aware of this question and so it is the first or the second question being asked in the MBA interview. Commonly in a B-School, it goes like, ‘Why MBA?’

While doing my MBA I too went through the rigour and especially this question which had so much value and success factor that none of our colleagues who were competitors too, in class, of each other wanted to share their piece answer of “Why MBA?”

I too started with an aspiration to be a management guy with a degree from IIM. After two failures I realized that it was somewhat really tough to be an MBA from IIM, both from the score perspective as well as on the profile basis. It was the time when there were only six IIM’s and the intake was through CAT. I decided to “go for the kill” considering my age, expertise and skill. I also decided to move on through my job as a software developer to give me some breath and time to prepare for the CAT.

On an aspiration basis, I only had thought that a Management degree – MBA was all I was looking for just after seeing the capacity and capability of the guys who are sitting in big positions like Director/CEO/GMs. All were MBAs and they were not in fact MBAs but management stalwarts from the colleges. I, at that time, didn’t know them personally but yes their names were well-known as all the business deals as well as administration with projects development, recruitment, compensation, talent management and skill – development all go in their names, in a nutshell, big-names and big package. I realized at that time it is not the IIT and IIM but it is the quality and talent that helps you go through that phase.

And I did it? I scored a little low but still, it was alright for the IIM call and I realised after the declaration of the result that I didn’t have a profile. Now, what profile meant was – performances in class X/XII. But I was prepared and being in sync with the best of the teachers/faculty in the country that focuses on quality-driven institutions with exemplary track records with location advantages will help me progress in my career with ample of benefits and support after my MBA.

So I started with the then top – 5 institutes and joined MDI Gurgaon. With years down the lane, eleven to be specific I am set in my career and have developed vocations apart from my regular job of writing, reading especially in academics as well as fiction.

What MDI gave me?

1. A brand attached to my name, a distinct identity from millions working in the country in the white-collar jobs

2. An environment full of dynamic, talented, knowledgeable, enquiring, strategising, pure, academic driven which helped in developing myself for the future rigor

3. A place which I can proudly present as my institute

4. A family- All who studied and the faculty and even the guards, canteen-wala - Sharma ji, Jhanji – the midnight walks, memories and memories and a social channel through media as well as change-masters flavour driven institute.

6. Flexibility in learning to choose from the best and be the best from a variety of courses, brands to work for, time to spend on, activities to indulge in, late night workouts to learn and socialize.

7. Big – lush green campus with state-of-the-art facilities running over the whole. The campus used to wake up at 4 am and I think I slept less than an hour or so.

Considering the above table MDI is catching up with the Older established IIMs in all aspects and is way ahead of the newer IIMs. I mentioned international institutes as they too are functioning in synch with MDI under dual degree programs. So international placements as well as connections with international institutions are very necessary and are definitely happening at MDI. The major brands which recruit at MDI do also in most of the IIMs too. It is definitely true the quantum of intake in the companies as well as the package is equivalent to the best of IIMs.
